The Revenue Sitting in Quotes That Never Got a Second Call

A customer called your agency, spoke to a producer, and got a quote. Then nothing. No follow up. No check in. The quote sat in your AMS, the customer bound with someone else, and the revenue disappeared without your team realising it was gone.
Every agency has dozens, sometimes hundreds, of these sitting in their system right now. People who were interested enough to request a quote, engaged enough to have a conversation with your team, and then never heard from you again. These were not cold leads. These were warm prospects your agency already invested time in quoting.
How to measure this in your agency
Run a report from your AMS on every quote issued in the last ninety days that did not result in a bind. Count them. Now multiply by your average first year premium and your commission rate.
If your agency quoted two hundred prospects last quarter and your bind rate was forty percent, you wrote eighty and lost a hundred and twenty. If even ten percent of those, twelve policies, could have been recovered at an average premium of fifteen hundred dollars and twelve percent commission, that is two thousand one hundred and sixty dollars in additional annual commission. From quotes your team already wrote. No new marketing. No new leads. Just finishing the work that was already started. Scale that across a full year and the number becomes significant.
Why this keeps happening
Producers are measured on new business written, not on follow up activity. Once a quote is sent, the producer moves to the next opportunity. The follow up falls to whoever has time, which usually means nobody. There is no structured process, no assigned ownership, and no system tracking whether the customer ever received a second contact.
The reason most quotes go cold is not that the customer chose a competitor on price. It is that they got busy. They meant to call back and forgot. A simple follow up a few days later asking if they had questions is often all it takes to bring them back. But that call rarely gets made because your team is already focused on the next inbound.
The bottom line
The cheapest new clients your agency will ever find are the ones who already asked you for a quote. Before investing in lead generation or advertising, it is worth asking: how much premium is sitting in your system in quotes that never received a second contact? That number is almost always larger than expected, and recovering even a fraction of it costs less than any other growth initiative available.
